Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Celebrates 100 Years

Colorado Springs first zoo, Zoo Park, opened in 1906 in the Ivywild area, as a lively combination of animal exhibits and amusement attractions. Financial struggles and operational challenges plagued the park, and a devastating fire destroyed much of Zoo Park, killing many of the animals and bringing the attraction to an end by the mid-1910s. For a decade, the city was left without a permanent zoological institution.

That changed in 1926, when philanthropist and visionary Spencer Penrose transformed a rugged mountainside overlooking Colorado Springs into what would become Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. What began as a modest animal collection evolved into America’s only mountainside zoo, celebrated for its immersive exhibits, conservation leadership, and breathtaking views of the Pikes Peak Region.

Over the past century, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s success has been shaped by generations of dedicated supporters. The enduring Penrose legacy, along with civic stewardship through institutions like The Broadmoor and the El Pomar Foundation, helped secure the zoo’s early growth and long-term stability. In more recent decades, passionate leadership, community donors, corporate sponsors, and conservation partners have elevated the zoo into a nationally recognized leader in wildlife care, education, and global species preservation. As it celebrates 100 years, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo remains a point of pride for Colorado Springs – and a testament to what vision, community, and commitment to conservation an achieve.
